This comparative study involves the construction of abridged demographic life tables, a
basic methodological tool used in Demography and Actuarial Science for the study of
mortality. For the purpose of the analysis we use vital statistics on deaths registered during
the period 1998-2003 and population counts derived from the 2001 population census of
Greece. The analysis focuses on six different local areas (Municipalities) with ver different
population size. The above tables were obtained using four well-established assessment
methods (Even Distribution of Deaths, Reed-Merrel, Greville, and Keyfitz) that calculate
the death rates and other survival table functions by age and gender. Comparing the results
obtained using the above mentioned methods for each Municipality showed little
differences between them. Hence, this gives us the choice of any of the above methods in
constructing compact survival tables.
