The issue of the importance for authentic ways of evaluation is the main challenge of the educational community. The most popular issue of the educational research is the design and the implementation of scenarios that will improve the 21st century skills of learners. Talking about those skills, we mean the critical thinking, the self-regulation and the self- efficacy. It is important for learners to understand by themselves, the level of their abilities. They have to know that they are able to set goals, to check their improvement and to take decisions.
All of those meanings, it is difficult to ameliorate them with the traditional ways of assessment. For this reason, it is really important to create authentic ways of assessment. There is a need to decrease the traditional tests with scores, because it is a way to evaluate the learners only at a certain time. The authentic evaluation assesses the whole profile of a student during the period of the semester. Moreover, it evaluates the personal complicity of each student.
A recommendation of authentic assessment is educational e-portfolios. E-portfolio is a digital collection of different artifacts, thoughts and experiences of a learner. The students choose by themselves or under some instructions, the material to put in and they change it in any circumstances or under the needs of the lesson. Also, it gives high motivation to students for evaluation and self-assessment, for the reason that there is communication with peers and peer-assessment. Students can understand the phases of their assessment and they feel that they are an important member of the team. The feeling that they are an important member of the team is the desideration of education.
In this master thesis, we designed an electronical course (e-course) to educate teachers in alternative methods of evaluation. The system designed with ORACLE BPM Studio which is a workflow technology tool. The lesson offers the opportunity of “learning path”, where students could follow paths according to their capabilities. Also, the lesson offers personalized learning, for the reason that each student can follow another path. The lesson is designed according to the theory of cognitive appertenship and it uses the suitable learning techniques.
Another important part of this thesis is the use of “learning process analytics”, which is the main interest of this study. The use of learning analytics has a double aim. The
first aim is the use of analytics to offer scaffolding to students. The other aim is to analyze the data, to ameliorate the learning process.
Learning analytics are an innovation, in learning research and it is suitable for personalized learning. In addition, learning analytics could help educators to take better decisions for each student. Finally, it is possible to make predictions in the learning process, for the reason that we could predict the performance of learners or a possible abstention.
