This work attempts to present the current trends and findings of international and greek literature regarding the evolution of mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector and their repercussions for the economic and social organization, focusing in issues regarding Human Resource Management. The first chapter deals with a general portrayal of mergers and acquisitions. Their motives are analyzed, their conditions of success and reasons of failure, their advantages and disadvantages which come up from their implementation, while at the same time they are divided based on general criteria and criteria regarding to the banking sector. In the second chapter a brief historical review of the greek banking system is presented, followed by the institutional framework of Greece about the mergers and acquisitions that take place in the banking sector. The third chapter widens the angle from which the mergers or acquisitions are examined and develops a complete image of the human resource involved in structural changes of such a big scale, in terms of management, company culture, training and the part of communication. In the fourth and last chapter, having in mind the theoretical analysis of mergers and acquisitions, the case of the merging of Eurobank with TTBANK and PROTON BANK will be presented, while at the same time, the human resource management will be evaluated after all these changes.
