This thesis entitled “Environmental Education and Methods of Cooperative Learning” refers to and studies how one can exploit e-learning in this field, and describes how methods of cooperative learning can be implemented in education. The paper initially gives a historic rundown of e-learning and goes on to mention a few definition of the term. Its benefits and drawbacks are then outlined as well as the potential that e-learning has to develop as a key instrument in learning. It studies various methods of cooperative learning and the ways in which there are implemented in both a traditional classroom as well as on a e-learning platform. It outlines reasons why environmental education is essential in our lives. It also states how important a role environmental education plays in raising environmental awareness amongst our citizens and touches on the relationship between environmental education and technology today. The paper moves on to make a comparative analysis of a number of open source e-learning platforms. Lessons are created on each platform in order to determine how user friendly each platform is. Finally, the process behind designing a complete e-learning application is described. This application is comprised of two environmental lessons and has been designed on the e-learning platform “Moodle”. The lessons deal with “Recycling” and “Climate Change” and both incorporate some of the cooperative learning methods outlined above.
