In recent years, the constantly increasing heating needs, which rock the mountainous regions, led to the excessive use of conventional forms of energy hereby enhancing atmospheric pollution and greenhouse effect. The relationship between the particular characteristics of an area, such as climatic conditions, geomorphology and the houses architecture with the environmental burden resulting from the release of gaseous pollutants, is a major factor to be considered. In this context, into account may also be taken the influence of the traditionality that characterizes the settlement of a region as well as the bioclimatic architecture that has adopted in the last few years. The specific diploma thesis examines the environmental impact from the pollutants resulting from the use of conventional and alternative sources of energy. Basically is a comparative study of the environmental impact of the two forms of energy. As a case study, the area of Metsovo was chosen as a settlement with a strong traditional figure, a particular natural environment and a climate which, like most mountain settlements, is characterized by a high demand of thermal energy. In this respect, the main subject of the thesis was the assessment of the environmental contribution of the conventional forms of energy in the area of Metsovo for the production of heat and the fight against it, with a potential utilization of Renewable Energy Sources, potential through a hybrid system. Initially, the gaseous pollutants released in the considered area are written down and described both in qualitative and quantitative terms. An alternative proposal / scenario is then formulated and evaluated in order to reduce these pollutants and adopt a more environmentally friendly system. A Reference is made to the architecture of the settlement's houses and the prevailing climatic conditions as important factors that affect the above. Finally, the conclusions of the study are gathered and some relevant suggestions are made.
