Abstract

This dissertation uses SHARE data (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) in order to examine the associations of morbidity and behavioural risk factors with mortality in European countries. To attain the dissertation’s objectives, the issue of mortality is examined using the reductive method, thus going from “general” to “specific”. In particular, the structure, the characteristics and the methodology of SHARE and its data are analyzed at the first few chapters. Subsequently, the next chapters include references on how morbidity and behavioural risk factors are associated with specific variables provided by SHARE. Thereby, a dataset is constructed that includes variables related to mortality, which is used at the following chapters for the purposes of statistical analysis; this is divided in 2 parts: the first one includes mostly descriptive statistical methods, whereas the second one uses logistic regression model building techniques. The last chapter contains a synopsis of the main conclusions derived from the statistical analysis and provides suggestions for further improvement in the future.
