This dissertation deals with the Greek insurance system, analyzing it from the earliest stages of its foundation to date and it is accompanied by reports from international trends in order to comprehend the current situation and feature the future of the Greek insurance. Specifically, in the first chapter the historical development of social protection, both in Greece and internationally, is raised starting from the pre-Christian era with reports from around the world up to the modern Greece. This chapter describes the first forms of social welfare that occurred around the world, explains the necessity for social insurance. Finally, the most significant facts for its consolidation are mentioned. The second chapter discusses the essential features of insurance systems, their funding, and the determinants of P.A.Y.G and funded systems. In addition, the key indicators for their sustainability are presented and comparative analysis is carried out. The third chapter explores the main factors of the crisis of social insurance in O.E.C.D level, the crisis situation is illustrated and the attitude of the E.U and international organizations to the problem is studied. The fourth chapter examines the structure of the Greek insurance system and then the problems and the factors of the crisis of the Greek insurance system are referred. The next chapter presents the most important reform measures of the Greek insurance in four phases from 1990 to today, on the extent of intervention and the results brought. Finally, the sixth chapter assesses the economic viability and social efficacy of Greek insurance while attempting to conduct conclusions and presenting proposals for a sustainable insurance system, as well.
