The safety of maritime transport is a significant chapter of the international shipping
industry. The 1970s was characterized by a large number of accidents with serious consequences
for the human life, the marine environment and the shipping companies. For that reason, through
the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a number of measures were taken in order to
strengthen the requirements for safer shipping.
For the European Union maritime industry is of vital importance. Since 1980s until
today, European Union aims in adopting regulations and developing systems so as to prevent
sub- standing shipping reduce serious maritime accidents and minimize the environmental
impact of maritime transport.
Today, more than ever, issues such as safety, competitiveness and strengthening of
maritime transport are in the top priorities of the European Union. The purpose of this thesis is to
present the main EU policy lines for the enhancement of maritime safety. The thesis explores the
latest developments and prospects and analyses the impact on the European Union's core
objectives for competitive and quality shipping.
