Abstract

The aim of this thesis, is to present and analyze the contribution of aerial vehicles in the development of conditions and qualitative improvement of Merchant Shipping services, both in international and national level. We studied the pros and cons of the aerial vehicles’ functions in the Maritime Industry, along with the presentation of their technical characteristics. Also, we analyzed the conventions and the arrangements that rule the usage of these aerial vehicles, in an attempt to obtain a more complete interpretation about their potentials and their operational framework. Additionally, we presented the growth potentials of the modern aerial vehicles (drones and hydroplanes) noticing that in general terms they can fulfill the constantly raising industry needs. In conclusion, the advantages of the aerial vehicles are plenty enough to cover the drawbacks that rise from their usage. Especially for Greece that is mainly an island country, it would be unimaginable for the aerial vehicles –throughout their appropriate utilization-not to play a decisive role in various fields of the Merchant Shipping.
