The increasing demand for energy in conjunction with the ascertainment of environmental degradation and climate change has led the States in the recent years to adopt the principles of Sustainable Development. A particular aspect of this environmental friendly form of development is the reasonable exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), the utilization of which European Union strongly supports in the context of precise environmental goals and energy supply security. In addition RES plants have also become financially attractive due to the various policy mechanisms designed to accelerate investments in renewable energy, insofar as primary natural sources like wind and sunlight are considered innovative, with limited burden scale and restricted environmental impact in terms of carbon emissions. Both public and private companies as well as individuals, given the rapid technological growth, are the main players that promote the growth process through investments in RES under the conditions of the international market and the inclusive movement of capital. Nevertheless, ensuring the fulfillment of the constitutional obligation to protect the environment based only on the dimensional nature of market regulations is questionable. Thus, according to the Greek Law, specific procedures are established in a preventative scope for energy investments by the public sector. This study examines the issue of investment in electricity generation from RES as a solution to the ever increasing demand and as a specific expression of the policy of sustainable development. It is a synthetic study based on the review of greek and foreign literature, which aims to promote green energy in an appropriate mean against the visible effects of the actual climate change. In the end of this thesis an overall assessment of legislation for the RES penetration in the european and greek energy mix will be addressed, as an effort to equalise economic growth and environmental protection, which shows that there is still much room for improvement.
