Effective communication among professionals in any sector of the economy is a
critical parameter for the proper functioning of a business or an organization. Good
functioning and effective communication within an organization can be one of the most
important targets in order for health units to achieve successful management.
The aim of the present study is to investigate the role and impact of communication
on health services, in particular the health care professional‟s satisfaction. To achieve our goals, at the beginning we have made an overview of
the relevant Greek and international literature and afterwards an empirical research was
conducted using questionnaires. The aim of this research is to identify and correlate data
from the answers of the participants of this research concerning the communication
among the health care professionals and the impact that this communication may have
on their own satisfaction in a direct way and on their patients‟ satisfaction in an indirect
way. Effective communication is a skill obtained over the years and through the
treatment of various incidents in the hospital. Hospital services require continuous
improvement through the development of communication skills of the personnel. There
must also be smooth cooperation between health care professionals. According to the
facts, there should be better cooperation between doctors and nurses since nurses do not
consider it as a good one. Information in the patient‟s file should be thorough and
available to the personnel, something that our research has shown that this does not
apply to nurses as it applies to doctors. Another important element is the immediate
recruitment of additional personnel, as nurses but mostly doctors have declared that
there is very heavy workload, both physical and emotional (burnout), and as a
consequence effective communication is undermined significantly in everyday clinical
practice and results in both poor quality of health care services and reduced job
satisfaction. Last but not least, there are other multiple problems such as the lack in
supportive behavior and motivation both from colleagues and superiors, the existence of conflicts among members of the treating team, the ambiguity of roles, the different
levels in hierarchy, the lack in organizational and other administrative factors resulting
in a reduced challenge of enduring possible extra working fatigue. As a result and to a
large extent, success in inter-personal and organizational communication determines the
overall success in how health services are being provided. The shortage of human and material resources, which is an important
feature of our country's health system, combined with the highly demanding working
environment; make the need for improvement of relations and communication between
the health care professionals even more mandatory.
