The object of this thesis is the presentation of today’s picture of port industry
in Europe and especially in the container terminals market, as a result of
their institutional organization and the investments that take place there. Do
the big companies of liner shipping prefer for their containers to end up to
the north or to the south ports of Europe, when they travel from Asia to
Europe and why? In order to answer this question, except for the related
literature review, six container ports in Europe were chosen to be examined,
three north (Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp) and three south (Valencia,
Gioia Tauro, Piraeus). The purpose of the research was to show the
continuous increase of the demand of the European Mediterranean ports the
latest years, in comparison with the north European, and ordinarily, more
“popular” ports.
