Isolation is a permanent phenomenon that has important implications for the socio-economic development of islands. Generally, due to their inherent characteristics, most of the islands are condemned to suffer the consequences of isolation and marginalization. Since 2006, the European Union has taken some action to mitigate the adverse effects of insularity (Green Paper and Blue Book).
This study focuses on the investigation of a small, isolated Greek island, Tilos. To this end, we apply the so-called SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats), in order to pinpoint factors affecting the development of this island. Based on the above findings, we offer some policy recommendations, conducive to addressing the issues of remoteness, isolation and sustainable development.
