A contemporary and complicate issue which is seeking for a more effective solution is the management of the Municipality Solid Waste, and specifically the biowaste that causes soil and aquifer pollution and it contributes to the global warming. It is imperative to provide an alternative rational management of biodegradable waste. The implementation of sophisticated methods, such as drying and composting, which achieve recycle, has numerous environmental and financial advantages.
In this study three alternative scenaria of biowaste management are developed with a technical and financial analysis. A spreadsheet model is constructed in order to estimate the different scenaria and their technical and financial parameters.
The interpretation of the results suggests that the most preferable scenario is the second one, where the method of drying as a procedure of the already separated bio-waste has the lowest financial cost compared to the other two scenaria. In addition, the use of natural gas as fuel renders this scenario even more economical.
Finally the decentralized management of the pre-separated biowaste leads to lower cost and, at the same time, is more environmentally friendly.
