The various views on infant mortality, generally in Greece but also to selected
countries of the former Soviet Union, have constituted the initial subject of reference of the
present work. After that, and based on the Vital Statistic’s data, an effort has been made to
present the evolution of infant mortality at the prefectures of Greek territory during the last
two decades. By comparing the calculated Infant Mortality Indexes of the years 1980-82 with
those of 2000-02, the estimation of the Infant Mortality change has been made possible for
the above period. Finally by using data from the 2001 General Population Census , the
statistical analysis of social and economic factors, that are related to the changes of Infantile
Deaths Index at the interior of every Greek prefecture, has taken place. We have attempted
to detect the social and economic situation that may affect the infantile mortality in order to
reach in correct conclusion as far as it concerns the infantile mortality during the last two
decades.
