The main purpose of this thesis is to highlight the interaction performed by the shipping
cycles of ship purchase process and mainly, how the purchase of second-hand and
newbuilding behaves according to the different phases of cycles (recession, recovery,
peak and collapse).
In accordance to this, the procedure of sale and purchase of second hand vessels, is
governed by the complexities and the contribution of several parties, thus it is considered
as necessary to mention all the individual elements affecting, starting by stages of this
marketplace procurement, until the role of the shipbroker and finally the trends in the
global markets.
More specifically, the first chapter refers to the individual stage of sale and purchase of
second hand vessels, with special reference to the MOA (Memorandum of Agreement).
Furthermore, reference is made to those involved with the procedure of the purchase and
sale, i.e shipbrokers and also to endogenous or exogenous factors in the shipping decision
making process.
In addition, reference is made to major shipbuilding centers and how they affect the world
capacity, while concluding, after an analysis of market trends in general, that depending
on the phase on which the sale and purchase cycle is, it affects profoundly, the ship
owner’s decisions in order to invest or not in the market of second hand vessels.
