Today, more than 90% of world trade is transported by sea, while the global ocean-going shipping has a prominent trend in recent decades (OECD, 2013). At the same time, the growing industrialization and liberalization of economy, have fueled free trade and the growing demand for consumer products. Shipping is probably the most extensive and internationalized industry, as its nature allows or requires the involvement and participation of a wide range of attitudes, cultures and practices.
The purpose of this paper, is to present the developments and prospects of e-navigation combined with the constant principles and requirements of navigation for the safe operation of the voyage. The modern electronic navigational aids and systems that will be presented will be the satellite navigation systems (GPS, GLONNAS, GALILEO etc.), Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems - ECDIS, the Automatic Identification System – AIS and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System - GMDSS, with representative examples of their online operation and mutual support. All these modern systems and processes are able to transform the role of the navigational watch officer in plain operator, in order to record the situation in a more automated system? Through research and history in navigation systems we will try to answer all the questions that arise about the safe navigation of ships.
