The current dissertation that was submitted in June 2015 at the University of
Pireaus it is atemted to analyse the role and the characteristics of the Designated Person
Ashore (DPA) under the valid regulations of the ISM code. The code aimed to form a
complete Security Management System (SMS) for the prevention of accidents and the sea
pollution.
The author was triggered by the phenomenon of the often accidents recorded the
last decades mainly due to human mistakes. The usefulness of the DPA lyies on the
managerial character of his position under which, he is trying to prevent any possible
accident along with his indention to become a communication link between the
company’s management and it’s fleet. Due to the complexity of his role, there is an
analysis of the ways that he can exist as a member of the company along with the means
with which he can run the company according with the size of the company.
