With the global shipping market has declined significantly over the current decade, both shippers and shipping companies have started to adapt to new conditions where the first demand high quality services from the latter. The key performance indicator is a crucial tool in the hands of both sides in their efforts to optimize their returns. The scope of this study is to present analytically this indicator in a shipping company, for a two years period, in order to understand in practice both how it is calculated and how it serves the market. By the end of this analysis the reader will clearly understand the environment of the global shipping market and the importance of utilization rate within it.
