The purpose of this essay is the analysis and the evaluation of the supply chain of nickel products, from the starting process of mining, where nickel is found in ore form, until the point of consumption, where nickel is found processed in a variety of different shapes and sizes.
In order for the analysis and the evaluation to be as complete and contextual as possible, the following methodology is applied, which can be found in the chapters of this dissertation.
In the first chapter there is a financial analysis of the nickel global trade markets, which primarily concerns the existing, but also the future production and demand of nickel ore and its products. Recent and existing nickel ore prices per ton, the largest nickel producing companies worldwide, but also their market shares, are all contained within the chapter.
In the second chapter there is an analysis of nickel ore and its products as a cargo for carriage. Its special characteristics and its complexities concerning the different means of transport are described. There is also an analytic evaluation on the use of different modes of transport during the nickel production cycle, and also the effectiveness of those modes during the whole process. After the evaluation the author draws conclusions on the optimization of the supply chain through the improvement of the existing transportational capabilities.
The second chapter is followed by the third and final chapter, which contains a case study on the Hellenic mining and metallurgical company LARCO A.E. The case study contains financial data from the company’s exports in the past few years, an analysis on the use of combined means of transportation for the company’s export in foreign countries, and finally different proposals on the means of improvement of the company’s transport capacity requirements are presented.
