Greece attracts many tourists as its natural beauties are abundant and its culture and history are of great importance. Tourism is one of the most important sectors of the Greek economy. The benefits of tourism are numerous but also numerous and significant are the negative impacts that may result. Over the years, the development trend of the coastal ecotourism is great, as demands of tourists are rising in the level of infrastructure and services and also their awareness in environmental issues. The island of Oinousses, which belongs to the country of Chios is the object of study in this thesis. It is a small island with a fragile ecosystem and therefore a careful planning is needed especially in developing coastal ecotourism. In the study, detailed proposals are referred for the development of coastal ecotourism under the frame of a sustainable development. It’s not intended implementation of proposals that introduce changes to the infrastructure of the island but proposals that respect the environment in principle. Furthermore, through the proposals is seeked a harmonious coexistence between tourists and residents of the island and also respect to the customs and traditions of the local people. Through primary research an attempt is done to specify the number of tourists visiting the island in summers and an effort of tourism forecasting in the coming summers taking into account the direct ferry link between the port of Piraeus and the port of Oinousses that will be activated by the1st of November 2015.To obtain a more comprehensive view, it is examined the percentage tourists of Oinousses in comparison with those of the island of Psara. Finally, it is examined the existing infrastructure of the island in order to become understandable whether it is possible to implement these proposals.
