The purpose of this dissertation is to make a solid record of the hazards that ports in general and especially Piraeus Port Authority and Piraeus Port Container Terminal (Subsidiary of Cosco Pacific Limited) face in daily basis.
In this thesis, we make a thorough analysis (totally and for each hazard specifically) of the hazards that ports have to cope with and we focus on their consequences in ports’ structures and users.
Also, in a structured interview with the representatives of Piraeus Port Authority and Piraeus Port Container Terminal, through specific questions we tried to furnish evidence regarding the hazards’ frequency and severity in the two ports.
The importance of this dissertation is also enhanced, by the differences which are pointed out between the two ports in respect of:
1. the hazards that the each port management authority considers important and
2. of the the way that each port management authority deals with each hazard,
thus showing the fundamental differences in the proprietary status quo (public port and leasing contract port).
Main goal of this Thesis is to make a specific and detailed record of the hazards that Greek ports (and not only Greek ports) face and show their hazards’ treatment strategies in coordination with the international shipping law frame. In addition, our scope is to give an incentive for further research in the specific field, thus reduce in maximum percent the dangers that lurk for the ports’ structures and users.
