The Greek National Health System, in order to operate efficiently and produce quality health care services for the citizens, the health care administrators must be able to manage the available resources. The rationalization of expenditure of the public healthcare sector is possible to be achieved, only if specific methods are followed.
The purpose of this research is the study of outsourcing in Greek public hospitals and it‘s correlation with cost reduction. The literature review was traced from Greek and International printed and electronic literature. We developed a keyword research, in electronic database, to find articles relevant to outsourcing in general and outsourcing in healthcare sector. Moreover, for the statistical analysis, of the data which was drawn from the official online resource of the Ministry of Health (esy.net), were used the spreadsheets of Excel.
Reference is made to the National Health Care System in Greece, in forma and sources of funding and evolution of healthcare expenditure. The types of costs and the evolution of hospital‘s spending in recent years, were briefly reviewed. We also, study the concept and forms of outsourcing and its application in Greece and abroad. The study was limited to data analysis for outsourcing of services of security, cleaning and catering to public NHS hospitals, due to lack of further available information in other sectors.
The research revealed that the outsourcing of services to external entities in the health sector in Greece has been constantly growing. Although total costs are dramatically reduced, outsourcing spending note a significantly smaller reduction. Despite the fact that, In Health Care the outsourcing of services to external parties is at an early stage, in our country, there are significant prospects for development.
