Abstract

This paper attempts to perform a sustainability study of the Greek Railway Organization (OSE S.A.) and of TRAINOSE S.A. The former manages the Greek railway infrastructure, while the latter provides with railway services to the public. Therefore, OSE offers its services to TRAINOSE. The primary objective of a Sustainability Study is to examine the costs and benefits of an investment in order to support decision making during the lifecycle of an organisation. The results of such a study affect whether an investment should happen or not. Examining the past and present performance of a company may enable perform reasonable predictions about the future performance of the company. Analyses of the statement of financial position, income statement, cash flow statement as well as relevant financial ratios are necessary. Following that, a Sensitivity Analysis is performed based on two scenarios. This enables us to conclude about the future performance of OSE and TRAINOSE and their mutual relationship. Therefore we attempt to assess the sustainability and effectiveness of the companies and theirprospect in the event of privatization. Apparently, the dissertation takes into consideration the Regulatory Framework of the two companies. This framework is described on the last chapter together with relevant European Directives concerning the restructuring of the Railway Industry. All European countries should ensure compliance with this Regulatory framework.
