The medical device sector is one of the most promising and profitable branch of the economy as the technological development in a worldwide level allows, beyond the improvement of the existing equipment, the growth of innovative scientific fields. The number of the enterprises activated in the medical device sector has been increased with rapid rhythms during the years while this tendency seems to continue, despite the fact that the newcomers face a lot of problems. The term “medical devices” includes a wide range of products from the simple surgical gauzes to high technology devices whose market takes a great interest because of their high cost. The aim of this study is the general review of the medical device sector not only globally but also in the Greek market and the analysis of MRI branch in Greece. Objectives of the study are: the analysis of the medical devices’ sub-field and more specifically the MRI branch with final aim the proposal of solutions as regards the existing distribution and the analysis of the sector based both on SWOT Analysis and the Porter’s model. At first, the theoretical background is given for both the nature of products, the characteristics of the sector in general and more specifically the market. Second the analysis of the MRI sector in Greece is presented and is connected with health economics. Moreover, the trends and the potentiality of the sector are given based on the SWOT Analysis and Porter’s model of the five forces. Finally, the study is completed with both the presentation of the conclusions and the solutions proposed for the improvement of the existing distribution of MRIs’ in Greece.
