The success of management measures applied to protected areas depends largely on clear definition of objectives, while simultaneously; specialized knowledge of many different factors is considered to be necessary, especially about the rare species found in those areas. The establishment and the management of protected areas have a long history in the world, however, in Greece the first official effort was made under the creation of the Management Agency of National Marine Park of Zakynthos at 1999. During the first years of its operation, the Management Agency faced many problems, with respect to its financial viability and to the acceptance by the local community. However, every year, six nesting beaches of the loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta are monitored, as well as the whole sea area at the south coast of the island, to protect the population of this rare species. Also, branding programs are taking place in addition with the information and public awareness programs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the success of management measures implemented in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. The present circumstances are simulated by Vortex in order to assess the probability of viability of the population of sea turtles. According to the results of the analysis, the population is threatened with extinction within the next 50 to 60 years, since it faces many risks such as the effects of coastal fisheries, pollution and predation. The simulation scenarios suggest the focus of protection measures at other stages of the biological life-cycle of sea turtles, apart of that one of hatchlings, in order to ensure the survival of the species. The continuation of all the other programs implemented seems necessary so that the understanding of the species behavior can lead to effective results.
