A debate is increasingly developing in the sector of health, at a global level, regarding the need for augmenting financial resources by limiting the expenses of health systems while increasing their efficiencies. The subject of the dissertation is the assessment of the supply chain conditions in Greek public hospitals, their effect on the hospitals’ expenses and recommendations for the improvement of the financial status and by extension the efficiency of the hospitals via the amelioration of the supply chain. More specifically, this dissertation attempts to determine the significance of logistics management through literature review and to depict a number of practices on hospital supplies and materials management operation aiming at improving the overall financial efficiency. The current legal framework on hospital supplies and materials management is also presented, together with the existing practices on inventory management, supplies and storing operation in the public hospitals. Empirical research involved questionnaires addressed to 75 public hospitals out of which 32 responded back. The findings indicate their current practices as far as supplies, inventory management and storing operations are concerned, as well as the use of information technology. The proposals of the hospitals to improve the financial efficiency of their supply functions are also included. The development of a long term relationship between the suppliers and the hospitals, the supply operation at a central level, the development of a consolidated coding system for the materials, the shortening of the suppliers repayment period, the use of contemporary practices and material management tools, the establishment of integrated information systems, may contribute to the improvement of the supply operations in hospitals and have a positive impact on their overall financial efficiency.
