Human resources for health represent the most important input of a health system. The purpose of the current study is to review the supply, the development as well as the demand for health personnel in Greece. In our county, their supply from Universities and Technological Institutes remains stable and high levelled in all school departments, except for Pharmaceutical and Dentistry. Their workplaces increased during the period 1993-2006, representing a growing demand. The density of physician per habitant in Greece remains higher than in any other OECD country, according to geographical imbalances and unequal allocation among medical specialities. On the other hand, the density of nurses per inhabitant is still much lower than the OECD average. Moreover, the relative income of Greek doctors is rather low in comparison to their colleagues’ in other OECD countries, but nurses’ income reaches the average. Medical migration does not seam to affect significantly the Greek health market. Human resources management is crucial for policies’ development and health sector reformations, to ensure that the health system will be able to respond effectively to its changing nature. A detailed analysis and data registration in all levels - from education and production of health professionals to workforce recruitment - are required for the achievement of balance between supply and demand. Subsequently, the necessity of adequate human resources management is essential and will make a major contribution to the provision of effective, efficient and high quality health services.
