It is a common belief that the development level of the information systems used in a hospital, is not just a technological luxury or a mere convenience, but it is directly linked to the level of the medical care provided. The Greek hospitals today, face the challenge of introducing new information systems for the support of all the basic procedures, both managerial and clinical, that are performed in them. Thus, in order to have an effective health system, both people and organizations should be linked to a network with strong collaboration and direct qualitative exchange of information and data. Therefore, there are three major issues that should be dealt with in order to make the use of information systems in health organizations possible on a large scale, and which this Graduate thesis studies: the creation of communication standards-protocols for the interconnection of different computer systems, the achievement of the interoperability between the different information systems of an organization and the safeguard-ensuring of the quality of the health services provided. As a case study, the Laboratory Information System (LIS) of the General District Hospital of Attica «Sismanoglio» and set forth the new laboratory application used by the contractor company, BioChem Diagnostics S.A., was monitored. This survey was based on the implementation of an efficient management model, the UTAUT (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology) formulated by Venkatesh, through which it became clear that the quality of the services provided and the results deriving from the hospital's laboratories rest not only to the use of multiple security levels, the identification of the samples, the extensive abilities of information management and the specifications of the tests' qualitative control offered by the new BioLIS application, but also to the control of the acceptance and the proper use of the application by the program's users (laboratory staff). The survey was conducted with the method of distributing questionnaires to the employees of the laboratories, in order to check upon the proper and qualitative use of the program, since they are the unknown quantity as far as the ensuring of the quality of the services provided by the hospital laboratories is concerned. Finally, regarding the safeguard of the health services' quality, a proposal-study has been made for the implementation of a quality tool, the Six Sigma philosophy, in order to improve the patients' waiting time to receive their test results from the hospital's laboratories, without compromising their reliability. Goal this paper is to adopt similar strategies-methods from other Greek hospitals as well, in order to gradually build an integrated network for the collection and processing of medical data, based on the safety and the quality of the citizens' health services.
