In the first chapter the social protection in Greece, as well as the historical retrospection since the ancient times till the end of the 19th century, are reffered. In the second chapter, the contribution of the church and the private voluntary initiative, are mentioned. Also, the ways, Greece can cope with social problems which had been caused due to the involvement of our country in war affairs, are analyzed. The third chapter deals with the social welfare in the contemporary era and the solution to the social problems by reorganizing the welfare state. The fourth chapter concerns the institution context of the social protection and the health system of some countries of the European Union. In the fifth chapter the role of four basic fields, the public sector, the private profitable sector, the voluntary non profitable sector and the unpublished care networks in the society, are analyzed. In the sixth chapter programs of protecting the family, the problems some sensitive groups of people face, and the retired ones as well, are described. In the seventh chapter, the relief of individuals who suffer from chronic diseases and need special care, is introduced. Finally, the eighth chapter focus on the programs that support people who are considered to be marginalized in our society.
