The development of health services in Greece contributed significantly in the establishment and progress of the private sector of health and insurance services. The low level of social provisions and their inefficiency in meeting the demands-expectations of the insured and, secondarily, the procedures for their realization, in combination with the investigation for new accumulation fields, were the major factors for the development of private clinics, institutes and insurance companies. During the last years and particularly since the 90’s a dramatic expansion of the private health insurance has been observed. An increasing number of insurance companies are orienting in the provision of group health insurance contracts, while at the same time the population under insurance shows interest to the use of private insurance goods and services with a consequent significant expansion of private health cost. The present study intends to present in brief the extent of the private insurance market in Greece and, in particular, the size, features as well as the prospects for the development and progress of the group health insurance in Greece. The said study mainly focuses on the features, classifications and the significance of the grouped health insurance contracts, the evaluation and investigation of the role of the private grouped health insurance, the fields in which the latter is realized, as well as the recipients to which it is addressed. The particular object of the present study is the investigation of the operation of the private health insurance in our Greece and its position in the health/social security system. The major aim is the investigation of the extent to which the private grouped health insurance is exploited for increasing the choices available to the insured, who generally have also some form of social security. For this study, we used primary and secondary data and facts from the Statistical List of the Union of Insurance Companies of Greece, the National Statistics Department of Greece, the Ministry of Development, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Social Budgets of the Social Insurance General Secretariat regarding several years. These data were processed and resulted in the extraction of useful conclusions regarding the private health insurance in Greece. However, in order to have more useful findings regarding the private grouped health insurance contracts, a relevant research was performed by conducting semi-structured interviews with high-rank members of six (6) insurance companies active in our country. The major goal was to evaluate whether the Greek insurance companies have configured effectively their targeting and strategy, so as to respond to the quality level demanded by the insured, facing in the same time the continual increase in the cost of the produced and provided insurance services.
