Cardiovascular diseases are a modern plague that pesters, not only billions of people worldwide, but also all the national Health Care Systems of developed countries. According to official statistics, in Greece, are recorded roughly 7.000 infarctions in women and 17.000 in men yearly. One third of total deaths worldwide are attributed to cardiovascular diseases, according to the World Health Organization. The cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality in Europe. More than four millions Europeans die from heart diseases. And all these have a cost in European economy €169 millions annually. One of the most widespread methods of confrontation of cardiovascular diseases is bypass. The importance of the cost identification is significant, considering the high expenditure of Health Care Systems in the developed countries for such interventions. The need for cost management is immediate through the cost accounting. Data from two major Greek hospitals, gave us the opportunity to examine the cost accounting methods, used in the Greek Health Care System, to determine and compare the costs of bypass that amounts roughly for €12.000 per case. Both of the hospitals suffer from weaknesses and present differences in the method of their cost accounting methodology.
