The recent demographic developments and the acute organisational and structural problems of Greek insurance system had created serious dysfunctions in the labour market as well as in the Welfare State in general. They place under contestation the future economic viability of the retirement system, but also the economic growth of the country. The present study aims to show, with the help of the critical method, if the future viability of retirement system in Greece can be ensured with a way that, on one hand the system to correspond to the insured expectations by satisfying their needs and on the other hand, to achieve its mission by maintaining its social characteristics, that is to say to serve the objectives of social justice, universality and equality from one generation to the other. The methodology of this paper is focused a) on the appointment of the demographic changes (age-related ageing, birth-rate, mortality, immigration) as the main component of configuration and influence of the retirement system, b) on the description of the current situation and the development prospects of the Greek retirement system, c) on the analysis of the economic sets (income and expenses) of the retirement system, d) on the analysis of the basic constitutive elements that composes, at the current situation, the characteristics (elements of reallocation or capitalisation) of the Greek retirement system and the basic factors that influence it, e) on the effectiveness of the already applied classic resolution methods of the retirement problem (increase of contributions or limits and ages of retirement, reduction of retirement benefits, enlargement of the attendance of women and immigrants in the job market etc) and f) on the investigation of resolutions that will resolve the problem and guarantee economic viability of the hole system in the future (reduction of unemployment and increase of occupation, application of strategies that will achieve active ageing of population, pensions privatisation or foundation of a mixed retirement system etc). This research is based on primary and secondary data, such as the Social Budget of the Ministry of Employment and Social Insurances (General Secretariat of Social Insurances -Economics Operation office) and the reports and the data of the National Statistical Service of Greece (E.S.Y.E.). Also, this research is based on data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (O.E.C.D.), the EUROSTAT and the General Confederation of Labours and Employees of Greece (G.S.E.E).
