The purpose of this study has been to evaluate economically the two available drape systems for the operating room (reusable and disposable), aiming to find out if the transition from the use of the traditional reusable drape system to that of the disposable one is more effective. The research was carried out in the General Hospital of Argos. There was an activity based costing of the two drape systems and after that a cost-effectiveness analysis, taking into consideration the advantages and disadvantages of the two products. The results have shown that the disposable drape system is the most effective and profitable choice, in terms of cost and quality. The final cost of the traditional reusable drape system, defined by eight cost groups, comes up to 29,681 € / set, with an annual cost of 58.204 €. By contrast, the cost of the disposable drape system is defined by five cost groups and comes up to 27.262 € / set, with an annual cost of 53.460 €. The profit from using the disposable drape system would be 9.18% annually or 4.744 €. In conclusion, adopting the disposable drape systems for the operating room should be a first priority from now on. It also proposes that the use of disposable drape systems become obligatory rather than optional, as it has been so far, on the grounds that it is superior in terms of sanitation and financially cheaper.
