This study analyzes the marine insurance history. Laws, customs, imperial formulas,
loans, and even pope’s edicts are merely part of factors amalgamated and gradually
gave marine insurance modern form. The reader is about to acquaint with all forms
and practices known during the marine insurance history in order to be capable to
assess, compare and beyond all understand the procedures led to nowadays common
insurance contracts. The first chapter focuses on analyzing the period up to late
antiquity. The second chapter focuses on the period of Byzantine, post- Byzantine and
Medieval times. The third chapter focuses as well on modern times, analyzing E.
Lloyd’s contribution to marine insurance, as explaining the Greek owned insurance
companies contribution in developing standard insurance forms. Finally, conclusions
are extracted for scientific and practical speculation.
