View/ Open
Abstract
The central aim of the present study is to investigate and evaluate, both theoretically and empirically, the factors that determine the international competitiveness of Greece’s tourism industry. In particular we will attempt: O To approach the terms “competitiveness” and “tourism” from both a European and national perspective, with a parallel analysis of the impacts of tourism. O To construct a methodological framework for defining the factors that shape competitiveness in the tourism industry. O To perform a SWOT analysis of the tourism industry in Greece, so as to identify its competitive advantages and disadvantages. O To develop a more general plan of action, useful for both the application of national tourism policies and the improvement of the country’s international competitiveness. The study aims to contribute to the existing corpus of tourism research not only on a theoretical level but also empirical, attempting one of the first complete applications of the term “competitiveness” in the study of tourism. Drawing from this approach, we will formulate a coordinated intervention strategy whose ultimate goal is the increased competitiveness of the nation’s tourism industry.
