This paper explores the process of carriage of goods by road and rail. The ideas of management, distribution networks and supply chain, are analyzed in comparison with the basic characteristics of the two main overland transportation means. The legislation and the intervention of European Union policies are also noted. Finally, the comparison of the two transport modes takes place through the S.W.O.T. analysis and their environmental consequences are mentioned as well.
