The aim of this thesis is to provide incentive for a study concerning the effect of reforms in the work environment in the Health Sector. Within the framework of this study a literature study was conducted which was then followed by a field study on the workers condition upon merger of two hospitals. The field study was based on the assessment of the subjective answers given by the workers to a specific questionnaire. The field study was conducted over a period of time when a wide range of reforms, such as salary reductions, withdrawal of permanency, increased mobility with associated risk of dismissal and increase in the retirement age being introduced in the public service sector. Our primary field study findings were found to lend support to data found in the literature. These are substantial aggravation of the mental state of the worker and an exhausted physical condition due to changes in their work environment. Workers were observed to show signs of intensifying their activities, of mental and emotional stress and of discomfort associated with job insecurity. Finally an attempt was made to list a number of proposals, first to enhance the study of the consequences of reorganizing the work environment on the safety and health of the workers and secondly, for a systematic reappraisal and development of methods for confronting changes in the work environment. All this, with the view to preventing occupational hazards and to promote workers health, as ‘’the physical, mental and social well-being of workers”, as stated by the World Health Organization and the International Labor Office.
