Abstract
This thesis constitutes historiography of the largest social security organization in Greece, IKA (Social Insurance Institute). Starting up from the before – IKA season, we follow all those political and social fermentations that led to the Institute’s operation in 1937. Subsequently, we watch step by step its expansion, studying its phases of evolution/ development. During the first phase (1934 – 1950), we will see the first legislative attemps for the foundation of the Institute, its operation during the dictatorship of I. Metaxas, the impact of the World War II and its gradual expansion until 1950. As the second phase progresses (1951 – 1959), the relevant laws that will be voted, will have a negative impact on the Institute. During the third phase (1960 – 1980) IKA begins to show its first financial problems, which will be enhanced during the next years. The fourth phase (1981 – 1989) is one of the most important for IKA, as the Institute changes significantly. This is the phase that IKA expands throughout Greece, increases its benefits and the tripartite funding is first applied. However, it is also the phase when the long term viability of the Institute is under question, given the significant financial deficit which grows with high pace. Finally, we present the fifth phase of IKA (1990 – 2007), during which several reforms were attempted, without, though, being adequate to give definitive solutions.
