At the dawn of the twenty-first century, Media and Information and Communication Technologies have become part of everyday life. As everything revolves around the Internet, do individuals have the ability to understand and process basic health information? The need for a healthy, literate community has become urgent as a result of the rapid innovations in biomedical sciences and the development of information delivery services such as the internet. These innovations have been steadily increasing the amount of health data available in the mass media and the Internet, requiring updated information. These developments have led to an expectation for informed citizens, a “literate” community, which can make intelligent and sensible choices. The timeliness and importance of the above mentioned factors were the reasons for the undertaking of this work, under the encouragement of Assistant Professor Vozikis Athanassios. In this paper, we will investigate e-health literacy both theoretically and practically through research. The e-Health literacy or knowledge for e-health literacy is defined as the ability of searching, finding, understanding, and evaluating medical information from electronic sources, as well as applying this knowledge to solve a health problem. Significant findings arise from our research on e-health literacy, which was held in Greece. The sample consisted of 1.030 individuals. 54,2% of the participants were women. The majority of the participants (60,3%) were between 25 and 39 years old, while 37,4% of them exercise science, art, and related professions. Depending on their activities on the web, 47,5% of the participants had low digital skills, 42,4% high or moderate, and 10,1% were not involved at all. A thorough data analysis is presented in Chapter 4, that investigates several factors and provides specific answers following processing with the statistical program S.P.S.S. Subsequently, a survey in selected health literacy-related areas in the current EU members, in candidate countries waiting to join the EU, as well as in Norway and Switzerland is presented. The survey also includes the United States. The 25 European countries produce less than one third of research on e-health literacy in comparison with the U.S.A. The Netherlands and Sweden (followed by Germany, Italy, and France) are the European countries with the highest number of published research in areas related to health literacy. Greece is in the eleventh position in the overall ranking among all countries, with 300 points in total, while Sweden comes first with 2.020 points followed by Germany with 1.456 points, Italy with 1.247, France with 1.211, Finland with 937, Spain with 693, Denmark with 622, Ireland with 587, Belgium with 578, Turkey with 428. The countries with the lowest e-health literacy scores are Cyprus with 13 points, Latvia with 6 points and Luxembourg with 1 point. Compared to other countries, Greece is relatively well positioned, and according to the survey in 1.030 participants, it is evident that the Greek citizens are adequately aware of e-health literacy.
