Firstly, in this master thesis, is being conducted a short analysis of the composite term of piracy. Afterward, the subject of piracy, which is dated since the ancient years, is reviewed to a point where it finally leads to the current period. The forms of piracy and the main causes that leads people to conduct piracy are being studied and also the main regions where this modern phenomenon found. In a second phase, the main part of my thesis is analyzed which is basically the methods of prevention and repression of this phenomenon from the side of onboard and ship owner interventions and also from the point of view of the International shipping community and International Organizations who try to help by contracting institutional frames, conventions and military intervention. Finally, the main question is being analyzed, if these methods are enough for cracking down the phenomenon of piracy or if those methods function repressively directly on the root cause of piracy and not only in the consequences of an existing phenomenon.
