Banking activity strongly influences economic activity through the diversion of funds from banks to firms and consumers. This relationship is mutual, since the repayment of the bank loans requires a healthy economic activity. The above relationship appeared intensely during the last financial crisis (2008), which turned into an economic recession which in turn worsened the situation of banks and made necessary for the taxpayers to carry a heavy tax burden. In Greece, the banking crisis expanded rapidly, bringing the banks one step closer to failure. This resulted in an acute shortage of liquidity for the firms and caused the collapse of many of those as well as the shrinking of activity for many others. Thereby, the credit risk took a heavy toll on banks and led them to unprecedented losses. The governments responded with the process of recapitalization for the banks, which took place in two instalments in 2013 and 2014, in order to ensure equilibrium. All the above developments confirm that the banking and economic activity are interwoven and therefore mutual reliant.
