The present master thesis focuses mainly on the examination of the criminal liability, the potential sanctions and the case law which contributed on the formulation of the internal, European and international law regarding the pollution of the sea by ships. For the purposes of the present, a general overview of the legal frame that governs the pollution of the sea by ships will take place on an internal, European and international level, based on the corresponding adopted legislation. Particularly, the thesis is divided in four chapters which thoroughly analyze the subject matter. Emphasis is given on the cases of Erika and Prestige, which mobilized the legislation production towards the direction of prevention and confrontation of the sea pollution by ships. Subsequently, criminal liability issues as well as sanctions will conduce to the understanding of the ultimate aim of the legislative procedure which is finally linked to the need of protecting the sea environment.
