Abstract

The present study focuses on the construction of abridged life tables by sex and cause of death, for Greece for 2007. The data used in the analysis come from the vital registration system of Greece. More specifically, the numbers of registered death by cause (160 different causes), sex and 5-year age group for the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 were obtained by the Hellenic Statistical Authority. For the construction of the life tables, estimates of ELSTAT of the population in mid-2007 by sex and 5-year age group were also used. Causes of death were grouped into five major categories: deaths due to circulatory diseases, neoplasms, respiratory diseases, violence, and all remaining causes. First, the abridged life table for all causes of death by sex and 5-year age-group for 2007 was constructed. Then the method and the mathematical functions used to construct life tables by cause of death are presented and the relevant life tables are constructed. Graphs of life expectancy ex and the probability of dying qχ are used to illustrate how much elimination of each cause of death would contribute to an increase in life expectancy for Greece for 2007.
