Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is the evaluation of activity of retrofits and demolitions of the ships and the prospects of harmonization of particular market with the global objective for “Green Growth”. Aim of this particular study will also be to analyze both layout and the details of this particular market sector, while special focus is in implemented in the environmental dimension and consequences of this particular operation. The structure of this study aims to identify forces of offer and demand that determines the present market frame and to focus in the policies that should be followed for the achievement of viable growth of this market, which will be fundamentally based on the principle of protection of the environment, under the guidance and supervision of national and international interventions/legislations. Initially, it is performed a short presentation of specific requirement and structure of operation of ships demolition. Aim of this analysis is the comprehension of this particular market by assembling the main components /characteristics of it; such as, the geographic dissemination of ships demolition, the human and labor effects of these activities, the diachronic turnover that is involved with those and the environmental questions that are caused by the growth of demolition activity. Moreover this research is focusing on the factors that shape the worldwide demand for retrofit and demolition of ships. While, analyzes the environmental dimension of this particular operation. In order to achieve that a full description of current situation is presented and analyzed, in relation to the current international environmental legislation related with demolition and retrofit of vessels. It is also attempted the overall evaluation of this market sector with the use of “key” indicators of economic viability and environmental protection. Simultaneously it is aimed the analysis and incorporation of environmental legislation and necessary protection in national level. The findings of this research will constitute as a base for the future proposed environmental policy, legislation and actions for the “Green” growth of this market sector, while simultaneously become initiative for further future research.
