Simple or combined-circle gas turbines are of growing popularity nowadays if compared to alternative marine applications. In present thesis the basic functional principles of marine gas turbines will be presented, while same for the advantages and disadvantages of the selection of gas turbines as prime movers of merchant vessels. A brief intro regarding marine Diesel engines is also presented in this thesis assisting the comparison between the aforementioned propulsion plants. Finally, some examples of implementation of marine gas turbines in merchant ships including some recent turbo - electric or other complex arrangements will be examined in further detail.
