The issue of maritime security is especially important for the development of shipping industry. Today the U.S. and the EU have adopted security initiatives aiming to ensure the whole transport process of goods. Piracy is a significant threat to maritime security and it is estimated to have a cost of about $ 12 billion annually for the global economy. The axes around which moves the policy of the European Union concern the strengthening of the role of the International Maritime Organization, the promotion of the international and regional cooperation and the commitments and obligations of Members - States, owners, crews of vessels, coastal states or regional states etc. The Mediterranean is today one of the most important points of entry of illegal immigrants in the EU, by the sea. In order to address this problem, the EU takes measures that focus on effective surveillance of maritime borders. Also there are more and more efforts so that European countries to cooperate with transit countries of illegal immigrants aiming to the externalization of border control in these countries. An important factor to tackle the problem, however, is the disarticulation of the international trafficking networks.
