The energy needs of various sectors of the economy, has become a nightmare in most cases. The oligopolistic market of conventional oil is becoming increasingly less adequate to meet those needs, both in terms of large price fluctuations over short periods, and in terms of environmental burden that goes dynamic agenda of more and more international bodies and countries. Shipping is an industry with increased energy needs and no small footprint on the planet's environmental burden. As a result, it is a sector in which this thesis finds particular interest in new technologies and solutions, aiming to improve any deficiencies. This paper will examine the possibility of adoption biodiesel from the maritime sector as a fuel, after it first makes a detailed presentation of biodiesel, alongside conventional fuels. It will also present the technical difficulties encountered in marine engines and how these can be overcome.
