This research has tried to analyze the rather complicated market of shipping and it has mainly focused on historical data that could explain the latest developments in the shipbuilding industry. It has tried to gather all the shipbuilding orders of the last ten years, from 2000 to 2010, while making every possible effort to explain through the reactions of the ship owners the reasons why it saw a shipbuilding boom. Is, on the other hand, has focused our analysis on Greek ship owners and on the Greek shipping market. Additionally, reference has been made on the necessary elements required by a nation in order to have its shipbuilding industry flourish. There are various factors that could result in the growth of the shipbuilding industry of a nation. Factors such as political influence could be the reason for an increase in the competitiveness of a shipyard. The structure of the ownership also defines the way a shipyard is operating, which contributes to the competitiveness. Furthermore, the fluctuation of exchange rates which is beyond the control of shipbuilders and the environmental issues, influence the competiveness of a shipbuilding nation. During the time period that we have examined a shipping cycle has closed and a new has opened. We witnessed all stages of the shipping cycle; from the blooming of the shipping market, through the uncontrollable growth of the shipbuilding industry and finally to depression. These last ten years have been characterized by the global recession of 2009 which greatly affected the new building industry that on 2007, has presented the highest levels in terms of shipbuilding orders. An interesting result was that of the dynamic growth showed by China in the shipbuilding market. Due to that excessive growth Asia, today, occupies 93% of the world shipbuilding order book. Asia is nowadays the shipbuilding leader of the world.
