The present thesis tries a thorough research of the use of Key Performance Indicators by the global shipbuilding industry based on the model of the Balanced Scorecard as this was introduced by Kaplan and Norton. The model enriches the established management systems, which were overweighed by information of financial and accounting nature, with a more consistent monitoring of additional subjects for the administration team. These additional subjects, based on the rational of cause and effect, concern the Customer (who provides revenues –source of accounting issues), the Internal Procedures (which aim to satisfy the Customer), Learning and Growth Procedures (which try to improve Internal Procedures). Finally effort is given to monitor issues about the Environment/Society (how they are affected from the company Internal Procedures) and the Employee (and how he/she is affected from Learning and Growth).Based on the above theoretical framework, the research studies possible application of it on shipyards (a well-specified and global sample of them) as well the possible extraction of KPIs based on that. The volume and the quality of the collected information moved contrariwise (with the first staying in low levels) which points that the subject touched data of strategic importance for every shipyard alone. For that reason a multilevel approach was performed that provided better information at the boundaries of the specific subject, covering incompatibilities like definition interpretation, system analysis, modeling, standardization etc. Finally some proposals are stated which were developed while the research went on and which on the writer’s opinion could evolve enormously the analyzed model as well as boost the productivity of the shipbuilding sector.
